How to prepare your home for winter

Posted on January 28th, 2012 by Jack Ferguson

In winter, your home can suffer just as much from the harsh conditions as you can. Whilst you experience cold and flu symptoms, you home can experience frozen and burst pipes and broke down boilers. Furthermore, trying to heat your home in winter can cost a small fortune. As long as you take the proper measures to protect your home from the winter weather, however, you should be fine.

A good place to start is with insulation. Ensure that all wall cavities, pipes, ceiling and roof spaces are fitted with insulating material. If you already have insulation, there can be no harm in adding an extra layer to double insulate your home. You should also consider getting double glazing if you haven’t already, as this will also help to keep the heat in.

Calling in a boiler servicing and maintenance expert is the next thing to do. You need to get your boiler checked out, and any problems fixed, before winter comes and it’s too late to do anything.

Knowing how to efficiently use your heating system is also very important, and it’s surprising how many people aren’t clued up on using boiler timers and other techniques to maximise the efficiency of their heating systems.

Not everyone uses a standard home heating system, but it is still important to work out how best to use other systems, such as air source heat pumps, in the winter months. If you do have a heat pump, you should probably also have a boiler ready as backup, just in case temperatures plummet to extreme lows and you need a little extra heating or hot water.

The last thing to consider is the health and protection of the pipes in your home. Make sure that all leaks and drips are fixed, as these can cause pipes to burst. If they do burst, you should also know where the tap for your mains water supply is too, so make sure you familiarise yourself with this right away.
